Kangaroo Island, like most of Australia, is regularly impacted by bush fires during summer. Fires started on the North Coast of the Island on the 20th December, , from lightning strikes, and by the 30th December were relatively under control, burning within contained lines. As conditions deteriorated, emergency service personnel worked closely with the community around the western end of the island, and by the 2nd January, evacuations begun. Many hundreds of on ground and aerial firefighters were involved, supported by many other agencies, private industry and the local community to bring the fires under control. On 21st January the fire was declared contained, and on the 6th February declared safe. Kangaroo Island is now in recovery. Fire is a natural reset button for nature, and it is not slow to respond. The fascinating and dynamic process of nature’s recovery is something that really should be seen to be believed. Visitors to the island over the coming weeks and months will be treated to the unique opportunity of seeing the harsh blackness, already softened by wind and rain with new signs of growth and life. The majority of the Island is unaffected by the fires, and is open for business.

Regarding the announcement to withdraw from Kangaroo Island, Rex says it will allow for a reasonable period for Qantas to match Rex’s daily services before withdrawing so there will be no disruption to local residents and tourists. The Islander will endeavor to find out from Qantas if it can or will expend its Kangaroo Island services. All passengers with bookings after this date will be offered alternative flights between Lismore and Sydney or a full refund.

Regional Express airlines has announced it will end services to Kangaroo Island blaming what it says in unfair competition. Rex currently operates a daily service to Kangaroo Island and has served the Island for 30 years. It will also cease service to Ballina, NSW. A spokesperson for the airline said it was a difficult decision and date for the last KI service had not yet been set but would be announced soon.
The ground crew on Kangaroo Island had been informed of the decision and any arrangements regarding their employment would be finalised once the final date had been set. Mayor Michael Pengilly said he was not happy and the announcement was very disappointing. If the Rex serviced ended, he called on Qantas to expand its service to a twice-daily service, that locals in particular relied on to get to and from Adelaide for meetings and appointments.

I might have heard of their business but now I can put a face to a name and I know more about their offering. Carolyn Childs of My Travel Research was guest speaker at the dinner event between the two days. I know it works really well for my business.

Baillie Lodges regrets to advise that Southern Ocean Lodge was destroyed in the bushfires that ran across Kangaroo Island in early January and the property is now closed. Baillie Lodges is immediately committed to rebuilding the lodge and to taking a leading role in helping to rebuild the tourism industry on Kangaroo Island. However, a reopening date has not been determined at this time.
Planning is underway to rebuild the iconic clifftop retreat signalling a new chapter for Southern Ocean Lodge. In tribute to Southern Ocean Lodge, the original website is still very much live and is a wonderful source of memories, Kangaroo Island information and inspiration for planning return trips in the not-so-distant future.

Kangaroo Island incorporates three distinct lithotectonic zones: the Northern Structural Zone comprising relatively unmetamorphosed platformal sediments, the Shear Zone Complex which follows the lines of the Snelling and Signet Faults, and the Southern Basinal Zone encompassing the Kanmantoo Group of metasediments.
These rocks are generally poor in outcrop, as they are overlain in most areas by Tertiary laterites or Quaternary calcareous aeolianites. The island is essentially a dissected high lateritic plateau with lowland regions in the north-east and south. Dudley Peninsula is an isolated plateau connected to the island by Quaternary sediments.
